Hardware - Using your own computer, laptop etc.

Q. Is there an option to use my own existing computer?

A. Yes. With the Soft-n-Sound bundle users can install the software and important sound hardware that delivers a great music-making experience. Recommended for those comfortable installing things inside their computer.

Q.  Can I use an old desktop computer with QRS 's PNOscan?

A: As long as it has Windows XP or newer - the USB midi connection will allow you to receive key information from PNOscan. If choosing/using new software for your older computer, then make the system requirements for those applications are present in your older computer as well.

Q.  Can I use my PC laptop?

A.  Software that includes 'soft-synthesis' features built-in (like Mixcraft), can minimize latency when running on a sufficiently powerful laptop. Otherwise, depending upon program used you might need to buy some outside hardware to avoid latency problems (see below).  If your software makes use of MIDI out  - it will need help to work properly – usually an outboard sound module.   In applications where MIDI out is used – a desktop with appropriate soundcard is the recommended solution.

Q.  What is latency?

A. See our new latency page. This is a biggie for PC-music making. See also the related topic on General MIDI

Q.  Is there a way to fix latency?

A. The technology standard ASIO addresses many of the computer system issues that cause latency. When the goal is to make heavy use of audio processing software - then a combination more processing power and RAM (and then more RAM!), will offer possibilities for reducing latency.

Q:  What about Mac with PNOscan?

A:  Fine. The mac has audio properties that work seamlessly with PNOscan.

Q. Can I use the ePiano™ System for other software programs such as word processing?

A. Yes. Since the ePiano™ employs Microsoft’s new Windows XP Home operating system, you can load any XP compatible software programs, although we generally do not recommend overloading the system with programs that consume excess RAM memory or disk drive space.

Q. Can I upgrade specific system components when ordering?

A. Yes, we handle these on a case by case basis based on customer needs and are happy to discuss upgrade options for processor, RAM, sound spec, anything you can imagine....call us at 617-440-5580.

Q. Is an Internet connection required?

A. No. While not required, an Internet connection is recommended for access to web site features, support and upgrades and the quickly emerging world of internet-based musical activities. We strongly encourage all Internet-connected users to add anti-Virus software to their systems.

Q. Do ePiano systems have a LAN/Ethernet port?

A. Yes.

Q. Is WIFI an option for my System?

A. Yes, you must specify this upgrade when ordering (or add it yourself later). There are inexpensive USB Wifi "sticks" that are commonplace for adding Wifi to desktop type systems.

Music/Software Specific Questions:

Q. Can I “upgrade” the sounds that come on my ePiano System or Sound hardware-inclusive bundle?

A. Yes. ePiano has provided a great sounding group of sounds compliant with the General Midi Standard. The included sound source is upgradeable via Soundfont technology. Links are included in the website favorites to a number of popular Soundfont locations.

Q:  Where do I get more MIDI files for Home Concert?

A: A search for MIDI files on the internet will reveal thousands of possibilities for MIDI files. However, unless the files are from a known and trusted source of public domain content - there may be a question as to the legality of use of these "in the wild" files.

Q Can software teach someone how to play the piano?

A. Yes, and perhaps no...ummmm- a loaded question that one. As believers in music education and the role of the music teacher, we hesitate to proclaim that software alone can provide a complete music education experience. The role of the teacher in directing, motivating and coaching can not be overestimated. That being said, our "core" software bundle contains software featuring step by step instruction that offers a robust learning experience. Indeed, a self-disciplined individual could hope to achieve intermediate skills within 6 months of aggressive use of this software.

Q. What's the deal with Microsoft Vista, Windows 7 and ePiano

A. Check out our current OSnews.

Q. I already own a copy of Finale, Sibelius, Band in a Box etc. Can I load this on my ePiano™ system?

A. Yes. ePiano systems are all based on the windows operating system. If you have an authorized copy of any Windows compatible software program, you will be able to load it on the system. Check with the software manufacturer for details.

Q. Can I add an ePiano system to my digital piano?

A. Yes. With the introduction of the compact Schoolmate XS system - you can easily combine our system with your digital piano (or keyboard) to give you the "best of both". Includes cables, adapters and is a truly turnkey (ready to run) system. Also, the PNOscan systems - are an economical way to compliment your digital piano.

Support FAQ

Q. What about customer support?

A. The ePiano™ is supported primarly via personalized Email: All Emails from valid customers (must state product and customer name) will be replied to within 48 hours. Live phone support – Free dial in service to 877-9EPIANO for 30 days from date of purchase. Paid subscriptions and per call service are available after the initial purchase period.

Q. What happens if my ePiano System crashes and can’t be “revived”?

A. Depends upon your system's serial number:

For serials, prior to 230, The first step that solves 98% of all problems is for us to send a copy of the ePiano Restoration CDs for your system. These disks are specific to the serial number of your system and cannot be used on another system. They will restore the complete factory default software and settings to your system (does not apply to ePiano Soft-n-Sound Bundle added to a user's existing system).  In the unlikely event of complete hardware failure, the Computer CPU Box will be shipped to us for repair or replacement. The ePiano™ system uses Windows XP – which is a considerable improvement in stability over earlier Microsoft Operating systems. Many service needs can be handled via remote diagnosis and system restoration features built into Windows XP. Plus the ePiano features a “backup” piano sound so the piano will still play without the ePiano CPU.  NEW: Staring Spring 2007, all new ePiano Schoolmate systems ship with Recover Pro technology that contains a special section of the hard drive that can instantly recover the system to the factory state - and may be able to recover lost files.

For Serials after 231:These systems include the Windows Steady State protection - and will not be subject to the same "perils" as other systems. In warranty (90 days), we'll replace the hard drive at no charge. WHen a system fails due to hard drive failure outside of warranty, the process is to send the failed hard drive to ePiano, and we send back a copy of the original factory settings on a new drive. The exact cost will be determined at the time of service, but there is no charge for the service to restore - only for the cost of the hard drive.
