Home Concert:
Situation:
Please explain how to get both clefs (treble and
bass) of a midi file to show on screen? I'm getting
just the treble or bass for some
files.
Solution:
- From
the Home Concert top menu bar—choose: <Settings>
- Then
choose <Following>, this brings up a new dialog box
- Go to
the section that says Follow Tracks and Display
notation for: One or Two tracks.
- Choose
Display notation for: Two Tracks
- The
next part is sometimes tricky—you need to select
from available instruments/tracks the two
instruments/tracks that match the notation of the
method book. Sometimes the tracks are not clearly
labeled Piano RH and Piano LH—so you’ll need to
determine which tracks are LH and RH. The good news
is that a given method book publisher will use the
same track layout for most of their MIDI
songs/files. Most publishers will use either the 1st
and 2nd tracks for bass —or the 1st and 4th tracks
(in order down on the list) for the bass clef part
and for the treble clef part. Try different choices
and see which matches by making your choice and
clicking the <OK> box . Note (Home Concert
automatically assigns parts to bass or treble clef
based upon the range of notes in the track—so it
won’t matter which track/instrument you pick for One
or Two).
- Once
you’ve found the proper settings—exiting the song or
program will save these display changes back to the
Home Concert file (assuming it’s on your hard drive
or a write-enabled disk). Voila—you only have to do
this once per song if you’re setup up properly!
Using any MIDI file in Home Concert:
Users will notice that a MIDI file with a track that
spans the bass and treble clefs will not be split for
display by Home Concert since it’s designed to make
use of the popular split-track format files. You can
prepare ANY midi file for use in Home Concert on the
ePiano by creating a split track midi file using the
Cakewalk Home Studio software included in the Create
Menu.
The basic
procedure is create a new project in Cakewalk using
the HOME CONCERT template included with the ePiano.
Select all the notes below middle C in the piano track
STAFF VIEW and copy them and then paste them into a
new MIDI track assigned to a different MIDI channel
(ie. channel 2). Then go back to the original track
and delete these same notes—since they’re now
duplicated on the new track. Save as a MIDI type 1
file and open in Home Concert. Test results and tweak
as necessary.
Cakewalk
has a neat feature in the <EDIT>, <SELECT> menu that
let’s you select notes by a Filter. You can use this
feature to select all notes above (or below) Middle C
(C5) and then cut them from the <EDIT> Menu , and then
paste them into a new track as per above. Make sure
your newly pasted tracked starts at the exact same
place as the track you cut it from our the hands will
be out of sync.
In Home
Concert—you then use the <Settings> Menu and the
<Following> and <Notation> choices to fine tune your
arrangement in Home Concert. With a little bit of
practice—you can created an unlimited Home Concert
repertoire library using commonly available MIDI
files, since Home Concert remembers the settings and
adjustments you make to the MIDI file.
